Chairman of the Editorial Board of Lokmat Media Group and former member of Rajya Sabha, Dr Vijay Darda, on Wednesday said that the biggest challenge before the media today was credibility. “The country and the world are changing. We will have to think about how to go forward. We are facing three issues: credibility, literacy and the bombardment of news,” he told the gathering.

Dr Darda was addressing the 52nd Indian Journalism Foundation Day celebrations organized by National Media Foundation (NMF), New Delhi at Vanamati auditorium here. MLCs Krupal Tumane and Adv Abhijit Wanjarri, additional divisional commissioner Dr Madhavi Khode Chaware, president of Gems and Jewellery Association of India, Rajesh Rokde, NMF national president Rajendra Jain, general secretary O P Yadav, state president Amol Gujar, Adv Samir Sohoni, personal assistant to Chief Minister, Kumar Masram, and others were present on the dais.

Dr Darda advised all television news channels to stop bombarding people with breaking news continuously. “Due to flashing breaking news one after another, the memory of people is getting affected. They are suffering from information overload. The media will have to understand its responsibility and behave accordingly,” he added.

The tradition of the country’s journalism has been very bright. However, the role of newspapers keeps on changing. It was different during pre-Independence days, post-Independence period and present age. Media has moved on with time and has discharged its responsibility, he said.

He pointed out that Covid pandemic induced a lot of major changes. “People changed their way of life and also their thinking,” he said.

NMF national president Rajendra Jain said that NMF had been fighting for a separate law for protection of journalists for the last 20 years. “I am happy that Maharashtra was the first state to enact such a law. Recently, Chhattisgarh also passed a similar law,” he added.
