Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shankar Mahadevan, Shadaj Godkhindi, Abhilipsa Panda honoured with Sur Jyotsna National Music Awards
When the legendary singer Shankar Mahadevan sings the song ‘Sur Niragas Ho…’ his tone sounds innocent. We try to soften our tone too, but that is not possible in politics, said the deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in a lighter vein. Lokmat Sur Jyotsna National Music Awards was instituted 10 years back in the memory of ‘Jyotsna Vahini’ who was a connoisseur of ‘Saptasuras’.
Today, this award is placed among the leading awards in the country. Sur Jyotsna has provided a platform for budding artistes, singers and music talents of the country and brought forward their talents before the world. There could be no more fitting tribute to ‘Jyotsna Vahini’ than this. Fadnavis was speaking at the Lokmat Sur Jyotsna National Music Awards ceremony, organised at Nehru Centre in Worli, Mumbai on Tuesday in the presence of a galaxy of eminent invitees.
Given in the memory of founder of Lokmat Sakhi Manch late Smt. Jyotsna Darda, this year’s Sur Jyotsna Legend Award went to Padma Vibhushan Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia while versatile singer Shankar Mahadevan won the Sur Jyotsna Icon Award. Similarly, flutist Shadaj Godkhindi and award-winning singer Abhilipsa Panda were honoured with the Sur Jyotsna Emerging Talent Award.
The award comprised `1 lakh in cash, a certificate, a memento and a bouquet of flowers. The jury for the award comprised renowned singer Roopkumar Rathod, singer Sunali Rathod, singer Gauri Yadwadkar and Pancham Nishad’s Shashi Vyas.
There are two giants on this stage today. Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia’s flute has captivated not only India but the entire world for decades. I think, when we award someone like him, the value of the award increases. Shankar Mahadevan is a very talented person. His service to music is unique too.
She had a different relationship with music: Jyotsnaji used to venerate music herself. But she did not confine herself only to music. She connected several women and artists with music through Lokmat Sakhi Manch and various other fora. She had a different relationship with music. So when this award is given in her memory, it will certainly bring joy to her soul wherever she might be.
Today’s generation of artistes is fortunate: Hariprasad Chaurasia
I am also a member of the Darda family. Since I met this family many years ago, I have been blessed by them. What the Darda family is doing for music is a great service for our future generations. When I started, there was none to support. Today’s generation of artistes is very lucky indeed.
Music has no boundaries: Darda
Lokmat News Network Mumbai
It is said the first creation was that of sound and when the sound fluctuated, it became a tune. The melodic tune led to the creation of the composition. Intertwined with the thread of rows of tunes or melodies, it soon became a song. We cannot imagine a better life without music. The music has the power to touch emotions, said the chairman of editorial board of Lokmat Media and former member of Rajya Sabha Vijay Darda. “Music resides in the soul of us all. Therefore, it is eternal and immortal. Music is humanity, and humanity resides in music. The Sur Jyotsna Award was instituted to enrich the music and the platform is performing its role very well. This award is given in the memory of my late wife Jyotsna. In this work, Rajendra Darda and Ashoo Darda have made a very valuable contribution. Jyotsna has venerated music since childhood. She advanced her talent on the strength of the valuable guidance she got from the learned pandits.

Great honour: Shankar Mahadevan
I have been associated with the Sur Jyotsna National Music Awards ever since it was instituted 10 years back. I am proud to say that I am the first artist to be a performer in this award ceremony. I don’t know if I deserve this award or not, but I humbly accept it today. Looking back I feel there is still much to do in life. That is the motivation for what I have done. Thank you… it’s a great honour for me. It is a moment of great joy to share the stage with Pt Hiraprasad Chaurasia who is considered to be God in the field of music. After accepting this award, I feel that my responsibility has increased even more. I will have to work harder. I want to score better music, and I want to sing better.
Tujhe sab hai pata meri maa…
I dedicate this song ‘Meri Maa…’ to Jyotsna Bhabhi. I have travelled with Vijaybabu and Bhabhi many times. She was not only a very good and ideal wife but also a loving mother. She became the iconic legend of the perfectly balanced family.
I dedicate this award to my grandfather: Shadaj Godkhindi
