‘Need capable woman CM, not puppet’

Lokmat Vidarbha Jyotsna Sakhi Sanman Awards given away in Nagpur

Maharashtra never had a woman chief minister despite being a progressive state. This certainly is a hot topic of discussion and concern. It does not mean that a woman CM will solve all the problems related to women. Women need to overcome the barriers of caste and patriarchy and come forward.

A capable woman should become  chief minister so she can handle the big state efficiently. A remote-controlled puppet, who dances to the tunes of another person, is not needed. These were the views put forward by women leaders on Lokmat’s platform on Saturday.

The Lokmat Vidarbha Jyotsna Sakhi Sanman award distribution ceremony was organised by Lokmat Media Group on Saturday.

Chairman of the editorial board of Lokmat Media Group and former member of Rajya Sabha Vijay Darda presided over the function.

State Women Commission for Women president Rupali Chakankar, State president of BJP Mahila Morcha Chitra Wagh, Deputy Leader of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) Sushma Andhare, former Nagpur Zilla Parishad president Sunita Gawande, Joint Commissioner of GST Nidhi Chaudhary and Head of Sociology department of Savitribai Phule Pune University Prof Dr Shruti Tambe and noted jewellery designer and director of Intrea Purva Darda-Kothari were prominently present.

A symposium was organised on ‘How long will Maharashtra wait for a woman chief minister’. Senior women leaders of four major parties of the state expressed their views candidly in it. They said women have become chief ministers in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which are known as ‘Bimaru’ states. But till now no woman has got this honour in Maharashtra. This is something everyone should consider. There is a reservation for women in local bodies so at least they are visible there. But most of women do not have their own identity. They work as per the directives of their husbands or other male relatives.

The state does not want a ‘rubberstamp’ chief minister or Cabinet minister. The percentage of women in politics must increase. For this, the caste-patriarchy system should be removed and women should also be given an opportunity to prove their mettle, the speakers opined.

Editor of Lokmat’s Pune edition Sanjay Awate and executive editor of the Nagpur edition Shrimant Mane moderated the discussion. Neha Joshi conducted the proceedings. Senior editor of Lokmat Samachar Vikas Mishra proposed a vote of thanks. Fourteen women, who have done remarkable work in various fields, were honoured with Vidarbha-level Lokmat Jyotsna Sakhi Sanman Awards on the occasion.

There is no woman who can lead

Surprisingly, all the women participants from different parties agreed that there is no woman at present who can lead the state as chief minister. However, they hoped a woman will surely adorn the post in the future. In the ‘rapid fire round’, women leaders sidestepped the issue of ‘Tell the Chief Minister in your mind’. Looking at the current overall situation, only the leader of Shiv Sena and the deputy chairman of the Legislative Council Dr Prof Neelam Gorhe’s name can be suitable for the post of chief minister, said Shruti Tambe stated.

Sushma Andhare praises Amruta Fadnavis

Sushma Andhare publicly praised deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’  wife and noted banker, singer Amruta Fadnavis. She said despite being deputy chief minister’s wife, she has pursued her own career and pastimes.

”She does what she wants. Women spend their entire lives worrying about what other people will think of them. Amruta, on the other hand, is unique,” Andhare said.

Andhare stated that Amruta has broken numerous customs. She also defended and supported another BJP leader Pankaja Munde.

Andhare questioned why any woman would have such a dream if there is an attempt to remove her from politics because she stated, “I am the Chief Minister in the minds of the people.”
